The Serpent's Dance

The Serpent's Dance

A Poem by skyelight

In the mist of the night

when the air is cool and chilly

all around the world

the Great Serpents gather in a circle.

In a field of blue and grass,

where the moon shines clear and true,

the serpents begin to dance.

A rattle shakes,

a snake hisses,

and a serpent slithers forward.

Moonlight glistens on his midnight cape

as the King of Snakes steps forward.

All around the circle heads begin to rise

and tail quiver.

The air is still and nothing moves

till the tails begin to sound to the beat of the Night.

The Great Black Cobra raises his head-

like a priest in prayer-

then he bows

flicks his tongue and turns his head.

The Serpent's Dance has begun.
