Two - Part Three
There was silence, interrupted only by
the chatter of the nearby couples sitting at the tables. I felt like I
shouldn’t be here. I shouldn’t be witnessing this; it was too personal, too
intimate. “I was the one who caused your fiancée
to leave you.” Robbie face was stricken. It was the
most heart-wrenching look I’ve ever seen. In that moment I saw his heart
shatter. Andrea was crying, tears pouring from her eyes in rivers. She was
almost as broken as her brother. “Why?” “I don’t know. I was hurting so much,
and I stupidly blamed you. I am so, so sorry. I couldn’t live with knowing what
I’d done and not being honest with you.” Robbie put his head in his hands and
all I could hear was Andrea’s sobbing. I didn’t know what to say or what to do.
Was this a situation where I had to pick sides? I would stand by Robbie, if
that was the case, but I had a feeling it wasn’t. “I need some time. Please don’t
contact me for the moment. Evelyn, I’d appreciate it if you stayed with Andrea
and helped her through this.” It was kind of him, he recognised
Andrea’s pain. I had a feeling he’d done some things he’d regretted, he knew
what it felt like. He left the restaurant. I went and sat beside Andrea. I put my
arms around her and held her close. She buried her face in my shoulder. “Come on, I’ll take you back to my
place, you need some rest” I said. She nodded and we left. There was
still so much to be said. I wondered if Robbie could ever forgive her. © 2012 Mahalia |
