Until You

Until You

A Poem by S. K. Burke

I never liked the way my hair looked in the morning

Or the way my lips aren’t so full

I never liked the size of my eyes or my nose,

Well, that is, until you called me beautiful.

I never liked the way I get too excited about things

And my ideas pour out clumsily in slurs

My hands too, are clumsy, and I hated their mistakes

Until you took them gently in yours

Now I don’t worry so much about losing myself

With you guiding me straight by the hand

And I ‘ve sadly been unable to love myself

But if you do, maybe some day I can

And I was so afraid to look at the future,

But now something tells me it’ll all be all right

I don’t need to be scared of what’s uncertain and new

As long as I’ve got you on my side
