intentions

intentions

A Poem by Nicole Schuster

the water doesn't care what you meant
that you meant to take a higher road
or to check for leaks
to stay afloat
or to turn off that dial

the children don't care what you meant
that you meant to reserve a percentage
or to donate what you've outgrown
to offer refuge
or to come and visit

the earth doesn't care what you meant
that you meant to reuse that bottle
or to start a compost pile
to carpool or walk
or to bring your own bag

the leaders don't care what you meant
that you meant to read up on the news
or to make time that tuesday
to message your opinion
or to attend that rally

the future doesn't care what you meant
that you meant to have started already
or to have stopped
to start building up
or to stop tearing down

the waves will crash
the children will suffer
the earth will burn
the leaders will rampage
the future will descend

the sword doesn't care what you meant
it just cuts

the road to hell is paved with good intentions
