just playingA Poem by Nicole Schusterfor those who were just playing and are now addicted
Around and around and around
You spin the knife Open and closed and open and closed and open and closed You slide the case In and out and in and out and in and out You push the blade You say you're just playing Just messing around A prick of the point Into your palm Once Twice Again You say you're just playing Just messing around You wanted to see How sharp it was Plain curiosity But then you see That tiny speck of Blood from the nick Of you 'just playing' Not enough to pool But a small puddle on your palm You realize you let something Out Something silent Something angry Something hidden Something real And you know you were just playing Just messing around But you realize that release That tiny unintentional release Is the words you cannot find The scream you cannot muster The tears you cannot cry And then When it all becomes too much When life decides to try to crush you You remember that release How Easy it was How relieving How quiet How comforting You said you were just playing Just messing around But not anymore Now You're serious Dependent Addicted to the sharpness That finally provides an escape You were just playing Just messing around But now you can't stop
