An Ugly Love

An Ugly Love

A Poem by Sonia

His eyes are dark
and his brow is low
the cut of his face
is nothing like
the cut of a gem

And when he smiles,
flowers shut
their fragrant petals
shying from the
awkward grin

His skin is like a rugged desert
patched dry
and coarse
with hair like needles
and hands like stones

He is no Renaissance man
I am the emu
With straw on my head
lips of wire
pale as sand

But we'll make ugly
work together
we'll throw out the mirror and glass
smite the gazers, our timely foes
and make an ugly that will last
