The Story of ArachneA Poem by SoniaMore old poetry! There once was a girl named Arachne Who lived in the country of Greece Who loved to spend the day Weaving sweaters and blankets of fleece.
The girls and boys all teased her And she didn't have many friends So she wove all morning and all night Weaving and weaving without end
One day a boy with Fuh Lye as his name Teased her until she cried "I can weave better than anyone," said she "So take that you stupid Fuh Lye!"
But poor Arachne's luck was not best And a figure approached her door It was the mighty Athena The goddess of wisdom and war
"So, young child, you actually think That you can weave better than I?" And so Arachne had to compete All because of that stupid Fuh Lye
The competition started and the weavers began Athena's power against Arachne People gathered, brought their kids Because everyong wanted to see
Arachne began, and oh did she weave Like nothing ever before But Athena was just a quick, Her weaving made eyes sore
Although Arachne's weaving was a fair match Athena still held her grudge So she scoffed at the weaving And declared herself the judge
Athena had won and Arachne would pay For making such a silly claim So Athena transformed Arachne Into the creature that shares her name
And so the first spider came to be weaving and feasting on flies Because she still remembers that all this started Because of that stupid Fuh Lye © 2010 SoniaAuthor's Note
