The Pain of Broken LonlinessA Story by Realityquestions I've been working on in my personal life centering around "where does 'making a difference' begin?"The trees sway with every burdened breath the students make. The concrete slab underneath me is cold and hard, unfeeling. I sit on a bench underneath a tree, observing the students in their environment. You dont get much lonlier then a community college campus. I am surrounded by brokeness, lonliness, and pain. Those three words are used so often - written across so many faces, but what do they mean? PAIN: a form of pysical hurt but then why do we use it to describe our emotional state? Can emotions make you feel pain? If they can, it explains why brokeness is always described as a state of being. "She's so broken, broken by life." I've heard that phrase many times. What breaks someone? What breaks us? The pain of seperation, anxiety, unkindness builds in all of us until we cant take it anymore and we break. Broken people aren't friendly, broken people can't move anymore. LONELINESS : what you feel when there's nothing left to feel and no one left to feel the nothingness How do you reach through the destruction pain has left behind and fix the brokenness that runs so deep? How do you put on a band aid on something thats only an emotion? What could I do? What could I say? There's only so many coined phrases before I have to go deeper, make myself vulnerable to their pain and try to understand the brokenness - find a way to fix it, or at least suffer with them. At the very least being with them will fix their lonliness. I stay on campus long into the night, observing how the trees finally sleep, their leaves only rustling faintly to remind me of the pain students feel just being alive. © 2008 RealityAuthor's Note
