A Poem by Cortney Lynn

You try and make a change

But all you make is a scene

An abrupt switch

From pencil to pen

And then back again

In the class

Where these things always matter

Everyone notices

The small blue heart

Right above

The pencil sketch

Of two hands

Holding each other gently

Nobody makes a sound

They all understand the message

Love is more permanent than we might have planned

The failing grade

Means absolutely

Nothing

It's a perfect image in what I suspect amounts to a perfect moment.

I liked how you changed the color of that line. It really added emphasis. I liked the whole way it worked out, the duel play of school and love. It was a cute teenage love with the things they do. "The pencil sketch Of two hands Holding each other gently" This line is so cute, I think it's my favorite.

"The failing grade

I agree fully.

"Love is more permanent than we might have planned"

Not so much with this one though.

Courtney, this is one of the best poems I've read on here recently. You've done a great job with it structurally, and you have some really great images. I especially love the "pencil sketch of two hands/holding each other gently."

The last stanza is just great. I love the reference to the failing grade meaning nothing. What I most love about this poem is by the content we know that it is about young love, but the poem itself is so well written and mature sounding. That's because you do such a nice job of expressing your feelings in concrete images. Excellent work!
