Alone with SAD

Alone with SAD

A Poem by Danielle M Regalado
"

Welcome to Social Anxiety Disorder and the Agoraphobic Life...

"

Sounds... too many sounds,
just too much noise.
Cover these ears from the voice.
But still the head pounds,
from too many sounds.

Flashes of images,
flickering light
Excess of stimuli through the eye.
It rapes and it pillages,
depletes all intelligence.

Walls... they circumscribe,
they're closing in
Bound by the terror within.
Shut the window light.
It's safe during the night.

It creeps, crawls and slithers.
It burns and buries holes.
Constricts as it siphons souls.
All hope, life, it withers,
concealed within the cinders.

I want to go home....

I really like this - I not only suffer from Agoraphobia (although mine is not as severe as what you describe,) but I also have aspergers syndrome which makes me hypersensitive to sound and light. I felt you conveyed very effectively the discomfort of these stimuli, the urgency of getting away from them. I'm not usually a fan of rhyming poetry but the rhythm in this was actually very effective in speeding it up and getting across the sense of panic.
If I had to criticise anything I would say that I personally felt some parts overdramatic, but like I said my agoraphobia is nowhere near as bad as this and for you perhaps this is not dramatised at all. Well done, a really excellent poem in my opinion.
I too have written a poem about my experience of agoraphobia (called "Something there is...") if you are interested but please don't feel obliged to read it. Only if you feel like it. Best wishes and keep writing x
