"It"

"It"

A Poem by Hannah Berry

We

We can defend ourselves and

promise that we're

not too broken, promise that

something will change-

and maybe it really will.

Maybe someday.

We hide parts of ourselves away

and try to forget “it” exists,

“It,” being something ugly or maybe

even shameful;

not only to our own being, but even
possibly

the rest of the world.

And in defending ourselves and

convincing everyone that we are not

all too broken, we wear down and fall into

even more pieces;

pieces that get harder and harder to

hide

because they’re everywhere

and then you have to face the ugly,

the shame.

The “it” that has been feasting on

your happiness all of these years,

and you can no longer defend

against the words that are

all too true.

You can no longer say that you are

not broken because you are,

and it kills you to be so scattered

and

worn out.

You can no longer hide whatever “it”

is because you have become

“it” inside and out.

It manifests and slowly destroys you.

It’s a parasite that’s taken you over completely,

and everyone can see the thing you’ve become.

If only you’d faced it sooner,

maybe you wouldn’t be so hopeless,

so changed.

So not what you could be.
