Nebraska

Nebraska

A Poem by Aila

Nebraska is green
Like my mother's eyes in the sun
She says this place feels like childhood, and for a moment childhood is not over
Will you take me back there someday?

Nebraska is green
Like the sweater you left in the classroom
I pictured myself wearing it, and for a moment I'm still in middle school
Will you buy me another one someday?

Nebraska is green
Like the cover of my favorite Smiths record
They dwell on things like I do, and for a moment I don't feel alone in it all
Will you listen with me someday?

Colorado is brown
The buildings are all the same
The politicians are all insane
Colorado is where I live but it does not feel like home
Nebraska is so green but it does not feel like home
I wonder where I'll be complete
I wonder if it'll be with you
Will you build us a home someday?

I'm a teenager, these are my musings, and they may not be good. I'm sure I'll get better, but for now I'll take feedback, as long as it's constructive.

This isn’t really constructive feedback, but oh my goodness this is so heartbreakingly beautiful. I’ve tried to write poems with this feeling before but I could never get it as accurate as this. The feeling of not really belonging anywhere anymore. All that’s left is memories and hopeful plans for the future. And the sense of longing is felt very strongly through this poem.
