Gift Daddy.A Poem by Simran Kewlani“Daddy-daddy, where’s my Christmas gift?” Asked the little
girl with doe-like eyes, She ties a paper to the tree with
her wish written on it and dances away in the darkness of the Eve. “What did you wish for,
darling?” her mother asked her cautiously, “You’ll see”, she said
softly with tears in her eyes. The next morning she woke
up and ran towards the tree, Her shoulders dropped and
eyes teary she slouched under the tree. “Mommy, why didn't I get
my Christmas gift? She asked in her soft voice, “What did you ask for?”
her mommy asked yet again making no other noise. “Daddy”, she said and hid
her face in her hands, Her mother wept and held
her daughter against her chest. “He’s not coming back,
sweetie. He left us.” She said, “Why did he leave us,
mommy? Am I that bad?” her daughter asked. “No darling, he left us
because God loves him more,” she answered with all her might, “But he said I love him
more than anyone”, her arms around her mother getting tight. “He’s in Heaven, sweetie.
He is happy there.” Her mother answered with her walls falling apart, She looked at her father’s
picture again and smiled a sad smile. “Okay mommy, can I tell
him something?” Her mother nodded slowly, “I love you, daddy”, she murmured
and lowered herself in her mother’s arms. © 2015 Simran KewlaniAuthor's Note
