Promises

Promises

A Poem by Mayumi

I promised 'til death do us part
so when he leaves the room knowing
that on the other side of the wall he is
a target to a gun with no licence,
but with all intention to kill,
I am a secondhand victim to this crime.
But I said 'til death do us part,
so maybe I'll be forgiven.

Sniffles and soft murmurs
and light fingerpads wading through
black water replacing what was once linoleum.
They are barely audible over the din of my reality
(the gun to his head).
Yes, I can hear the sniffles
but remember what I always taught you darling:
Always keep your promises.

People say parenthood blinds you--
Well it didn't get me.
I see my future in 20/20 and it's the gun to my head.
One day your voice will change and
your height will peak,
But just remember what I always told you darling:
Never break your promises.

Someday you may have aisles to walk down and
Scrolls to accept and gowns to don.
Please remember that I promised 'til death,
and one day you might forgive me because
I had to keep my word.
And one day you might just realize that
I was only until death parted us.
