Male MoonA Poem by Silvia - Scribo, Ergo Sum!... well, is it really THEM and US?
Odd as it is, the German moon is male.
Not la luna, la lune or chandrama – No - der Mond – definitely male. Admitted, we (meaning us Germans) do have a knack for attributing linguistic gender with some eccentricity. Old Mark Twain once noted incredulously that in German a turnip (die Rübe) can be decidedly female, while a girl (das Mädchen) is a mere neuter. Much frowned upon, too, that we have a fatherland, while the rest of the world seems to have one´s land from one´s mother. Well … But why, in the heavens, the moon? Or the sun, for that matter, because that – even odder – is female in German (die Sonne)? When everybody knows that the moon with its changing face and cycle, its exasperating inconsistencies and mood swings, is the blatantly obvious embodiment of the female principle? While the sun - steady, strong and warm - must surely be male … Guess what? – Maybe there is more man in moon than even man would care to think, and more woman in man than woman would admit. Shame, really. It´s so much easier to think about them and us … Please No Embedding © 2008 Silvia - Scribo, Ergo Sum!Reviews
