Silent Night

Silent Night

A Poem by Justin Tobey
"

I stepped outside my door tonight... What a shock! ;)

"

The first step outside the door

reveals a whole other world,

right outside our own.

We look at it everyday,

but never take part in its quiet splendor.

Through dirty windows, it seems mundane,

but its power resides in its pure silence.

The black, infinitely deep sky

is covered in the fiery glow

of the shining, silver-blue stars.

A quiet, cool loneliness pervades,

surprisingly comforting

instead of the despair

that usually accompanies it.

The scent of soft, warm laundry

and a fresh, misty rain

comforts me.

It adds a new dimension of feeling

to the beautiful silence

of the empty street.

The pure amber beams of the streetlights

reflect off of shallow puddles

and dazzle the blackness.

It adds both light and dark

with its shining glow;

filling cracks,

casting shadows.

I have never read any of your work before and I like your writing from just this one. You show a special thankfulness through your words about the simple things in life, we so often take for granted.

I especially like the line where you speak of "beautiful silence on the empty street." You are one of the first writers whom I have run across who speaks of silence as beautiful, as I see it. Silence, my best friend. Silence, the most beautiful noise.

You write with such wonderful language, full of imagery I can picture through your descriptions. Way to go!

Justin - Interesting how your night is quiet and mine is anything but quiet. I hear the constant hum of crickets and night birds/creatures.

I enjoyed this read very much.

everyday - every day

Look to cut out unnecessary words like "but".
