The Mound

The Mound

A Poem by Justin Tobey
"

This is based on a mound of dirt that was a popular hang out for me and my friends. It's gone now, but you can still see the bright grass and small bump in the land. This one's for you guys...

"

A field of brightest, emerald grass

spread out across the earth.

The sound of laughter, smooth as glass,

spoke silently its worth.

The sky of drifting blue and white

watched out with love and care,

and drops of sunny, amber light

rained down from highest air.

Yet in the farthest corner of

this breathless field of joy,

there sat a mound devoid of love,

that most sought to destroy.

They brought in hammers, shovels, flames

to flatten, move, or burn,

but to the mound, these found no claims,

so hope of life was spurned.

The seasons passed, from hot to cold,

and back to hot once more,

and finally a people bold

came out to end this war.

They sat upon the mound each day,

protecting with their souls.

But to their endless, deep dismay,

their plan was filled with holes.

For in their loyal heart's embrace

a jealousy flared through

Another people, gone from grace.

And so they fought, the two.

The mound was captured, back and forth

from love and then desire.

The winds of winter blew from North,

but neither clan would tire.

It ravaged on for months and months

'til Autumn's breath flew down,

and to their shock and greatest awe,

the mound was not as brown.

A blade or two of shining grass,

out-shone the em'rald field.

And though the clans stepped on them all,

they always grew and healed.

The fighting still endured the growth,

but less and less, they found.

For with the life, a silent oath,

was written, whole and bound.

When Winter's icy fog took hold,

a miracle occured.

For in the land of sunny gold,

a rainy curtain blurred.

With drops of heat and fresh, cool rain,

the final leap was done.

The pulse of life, though filled with pain,

spread tendrils to the sun.

When Winter's rains had turned to mist,

and life went on as well,

the mound was tiny, half its size,

but filled with life's love spell.

Through all of this, emotions spread,

and filled this canvas bare

with words of power left unsaid,

and life's redeeming prayer.

Perfect flow and imagery. What a wonderful tale. We all have places we hang out at when we are growing up - ours happened to be a local parking lot - yours sounds much more lovely despite the battle upon its ground. Thank you for sharing this. Quite exquisite.

Gorgeous! Your imagery was beautiful Justin,
and I must say, this flowed...effortlessly :)

I think it's difficult to tell a story in a poem,
while keeping it in a poetry form of sort -- and you pulled
it off wonderfully my friend. Bravo!!

Aww... this is such a good poem about our groups little hangout!! It stinks that other people have started to go and circle it and gossip or whatever they do over there....
