Breaking Point

Breaking Point

A Poem by Justin Tobey
"

Depression has lifted! (Hopefully for good!) :D

"

Harsh reality slashes back and forth,

filling my soul with pure, festering shadow.

The darkness ravages my mindscape,

destroying the happiness and bliss

that was once found in the simplest things.

The emerald, dew-covered blades of grass

that once so enthralled me with their beauty

fade to nothing more than dull background,

passing by with dull recognition.

Soft, golden, shimmering sand,

that once enraptured my vision

with hopes of love, peace, and calm

are barely even noticed by me.

Gold mist whithers to dust in the wind.

Meanwhile, I go about my days as usual,

and the growing despair in my heart hides.

But never dies away. With the starry night,

senseless fears and petty angers

erupt in a vortex of spiraling depression.

Negative qualities assault my mind.

My lack of definition,

untameable individuality

the contradicting need and disgust

of fitting in with the others.

So few around me

can traverse the complex corridors

of my heart, soul, and mind.

Finally, I reach the breaking point.

Tears burst out, sobs rack my body

as the black chaos fight to overwhelm me.

Everything fades away to reveal

the battle of light and dark within.

Cleansing Water and Fire soothe me

and I realize with my first hope in weaks:

As the breaking point splits down the barriers of me,

it releases the foul contortions of reason.

It is not my mind that has reached its breaking point,

but the horrible dam of depression

that locked away the simple pleasure and bliss.

Life returns to the unending pattern,

but in my hollow smile

is a spark of true joy as I revel in the world.

The empty void of my eyes

is filled with a flash of new creativity.

Shining, vibrant grass fills my mind

and my heart is surrounded

by sparkling golden mist.

The emotion conveyed in this piece with its vivid and descriptive imagery is completely enthralling and evocative. I can truly empathize with this place - as I have been there before. And when the dark veil lifts the world is alight. Wonderfully captured. Thank you for sharing your immense talent.

Justin - With such an age difference between us this write shows how human emotion is the same. (You must go read what I just posted. It is so similar to what you expressed here).

Just know that you are not alone in your frustration with the world, but unlike me today, you found something positive.

You should read "Renascence" by Edna St. Vincent Millay.
