![]() The Crystal SphereA Poem by Justin Tobey![]() Althought the idea is similar, this is not like my other poem, In the Sky. This one focuses more on the sky itself, and less on what is in it. The style is also quite different.![]() Layer after sapphire layer Of intricate, crystalline glass Form a circle around the Earth, Simultaneously trapping and freeing Those who exist within its sphere. The great eye circles around And is followed by the silver crescent. Tiny stars mark the flaws Thin clouds of milky vapor Spin inbetween the layers, Covering the greater lights.
Or, perhaps, the deep blue sky Is not of sapphire glass, But of cobalt petals? And, somewhere, within The overlapping, carressing pieces, The earth spins around, Merely a fragment of pollen To be carried on the wind Or sucked up by a bee, Or, maybe, To gently float and sway From one flower to another, One world to another?
What is the sky is actually The beautiful, hazel iris Of a gentle, all-seeing goddess? The sun could be one pupil, The moon could be the other. And on those rare occasions When the moon blocks the sun, She is winking, telling us That all will be all right. © 2008 Justin TobeyAuthor's Note
