![]() YggdrasilA Poem by Justin Tobey![]() I was reading about Norse mythology, and I thought I'd write about Yggdrasil, the world-tree.![]()
The Island:
Dawn breaks,
And spreads its velvet arms
Around the rim of the world.
Water splashes everywhere,
Except for one island.
Falling:
A speck,
Falling from the sky’s heart,
A tiny, golden sphere.
Clouds drift occasionally,
Split by the falling seed.
Dropping:
With a thud,
And several rocky bumps,
The seed drops downward.
It falls to a peaceful pool,
Which ripples and bubbles.
Gathering:
The pool
Reflects with copper highlights.
While sapphire flames rise upward,
A silver wind flows downward,
Caressing the golden seed.
Rooting:
The sky
Trembles and darkens
As the golden seed cracks.
Tendrils of deep blue ink swirl,
Rooting themselves in the island.
Passing:
The day passes,
And the sun sets to the western sky
In waves of pink and gold.
The light fades and shrinks,
As twilight approaches.
Moment:
The sun sets,
With a fiery, blazing splash
Into the deep, whirling seas.
In that single moment,
The Tree appears.
Growth:
Lush,
Vivid leaves fall outward like veils
Under the silver moonlight.
Gnarled roots envelop the island
And become part of it.
Living:
As the moon
Rides across the nightly path,
Living creatures roam and flourish.
Silvery shrouds of mist and wisdom
Veil the mysterious Tree.
Yggdrasil.
