A Promise

A Promise

A Poem by C.R.Turner

Today the world
just got too much.
All alleys seemed blind;
friendly ears, deaf;
the way forward, dumb.

So I sat myself on a big white rock
by the sea,
and soaked up the morning sun.

I looked at the dog
and thought,
it's just you and me pal -
against the world.
But he was more interested
in his piece of seaweed!

I looked back into the waves
and thought seriously about running away.
Just me and him,
roadtripping,
getting out of here,
losing ourselves in the jungle.

Then I remembered.

The promise -
made in the quietest moment of honesty
I have ever experienced.
"Will you stay with me?" she whispered...
When a goddess asks you this
there is always only one answer.

Suddenly I felt a warm rush
hotter than the sun,
brimming over my soul,
rising, almost choking..

This promise trumps everything -
arguments, misunderstandings,
doubts, anger, frustration, ego -
all hopelessly wither away
under the weight of that promise.

This is the one thing I can get right,
and I have no choice now
but to honour her, and my promise.

Come on boy!
