Looking Back

Looking Back

A Poem by C.R.Turner
"

Written during a crossing of the Irish Sea, 2012

"
Through the ship's salty glass,
I gaze upon the land of my birth
for the first time ever
with the eyes of a stranger..

How has it come this far
that with each nautical mile
added between us
I feel closer to home?

Was it never my home
but only now realised?
Or did I move unbeknownst
somewhere along the way?

Neither.

The land of my birth is just a rock.
Cold and unfeeling.
Ignorant of my desires.

But what I carry in my heart
is warm, soft and travels with me
belongs to no sandy shore
and enjoys its own weather.

Makes me think of that song, "Irish Heartbeat" by Van Morrison...

I especially liked the writing in your first two stanzas, C

I think that one can be content and happy anywhere, its a feeling that comes from within. home is not so much a physical place as it is a psychological one, where we are safe, nurtured and feel loved and accepted.

Your last stanza - magic

Thanking you, LA. Yes, we have far too much attachment to inanimate objects. Stupid monkey!
I like the ending the most.

I'm a professional €150k a year poet. I can go from nought to tingly in two stanzas or less! Yeah right!! Sorry to disappoint but I'm just a regular guy processing his dirty linen in public, v.. more..
