Bring a new cat or kitten home requires some advanced planning. Your cat’s natural curiosity will get him into everything. These tips will help you prepare for his arrival.

Start by cat-proofing your home as you would for a new baby. Remove flowers or house plants that are toxic to cats. And use child safety locks wherever you store house cleaning supplies. Protect your cat by securing electrical cords and keep cords that dangle out of reach. Use safety plugs in outlets and secure window screens.

Get your playful cat an assortment of fun toys, a cat bed and a scratching post. And set them up ahead of time. Practical cat supplies to get in advance include cat carriers, grooming tools such as a bristle brush, a cat toothbrush, toothpaste and flea and tick prevention. Choose ceramic or stainless steel water and food bowl. And initially continue to feed your cat a food he has been eating so he doesn’t get an upset stomach. If you decide to switch food, transition slowly over a period of 7 to 10 days. Get a litter box, litter mat, scoop, litter disposal system and litter. You want to start with a litter he is used to. If you have more than one cat, the rule of thumb is one litter cat per cat plus one.

Once you bring your new cat home, initially keep him in one room with all the cat products he needs. Give him time to adjust to his new surroundings, new people and other pets. It could take him a few weeks to feel at home. Always introduce your new cat to other pets slowly. Before you know it, your cat will feel right at home. Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian within the first week to discuss vaccinations, nurturing and proper nutrients. You can also ask for care tips specific to your cat. Preparing your new cat’s first few weeks at home will make his transition a happy one.
