The Things We Shall Assume

The Things We Shall Assume

A Poem by Shutter Speed

Blink and the evidence is gone.
Not every moment is Kodak-worthy,
not every memory one for us to anchor ourselves on.
But the determined wave of time
(all clandestinely silky and gossamer until you jump in),
barreling on to somewhere meaningful we shall assume,
will pass by an anchor just as quickly as a loitering thought.
And since even no levee, much less yourself, is quite strong enough to overcome the grays and
cracks and pressures of time,
you'd better tear your eyes away from those furrows on the outer jib,
close the book,
and barrel on with time to that somewhere meaningful
(we shall assume).
And, hey, if you're really good,
you might just be able to drag that anchor along with you,
maybe catch a few loitering thoughts in your butterfly net.
