Last Breath

Last Breath

A Poem by Jennifer Warnock

 Lying there in bed

he looks to her with sad eyes.

It was only a short time

since they first met.

Only had been a week,

since they had their first date.

Now he was lying there

in his death bed.

It had happened

the night of their date.

Driving home

where he was going to steal a kiss.

A couple blocks from her house

they had a crash.

He turned the car at last minute,

just so she wouldn't get hurt.

Now he was about to die

and he was proud to be there.

IF the car was hit head on

then they both would have died.

He was happy

to have been able to spare her life.

Sitting next to his bed, she had tears in her eyes,

she wouldn't cry in front of him,

but she too knew what was happening.

They stared into each other eyes

and he smiled at her.

With his last breath he said;

I'm glad it was me.”

Pretty romantic if you ask me, reminds me of that Pearl Jam song, perhaps you know the name. Oh, it's called 'Last Kiss', I think. Sweet.

awww that was so sweet. hallmark movie material. i love narrative poems. only suggestion is in one line you say "still a kiss" instead of "steal" one. but overall, very good poem.
