Snooze

Snooze

A Story by shmarol

“Are you awake?”

She places one foot on the first step of the stairway.

The crack in the wooden step creates the faintest sound.

Up the stairway, up the bedpost, over his pillow, and precisely in his ear.

“I’ll be down in 10 minutes!”

She stands, foot still on the first step.

She tilts her head slightly to the left and stares at his door.

She climbs up two more steps.

She sits, in her light blue flannel pajamas, knees slightly apart, hands crossed, her back arched.

“Did you set your alarm?”

He lifts his head a few inches off his pillow.

His window is bright, his sheets are the perfect touch, they are soft in a sweet yellow that falls gently across him.

He falls back asleep.
