Keeping Quiet

Keeping Quiet

A Poem by Moonlight
"

This poem is written from the point of view of a girl who sacrifices her self esteem for the safety of her brother ; to show how the society views such incidents and the toll it takes on her mind.

"

Keeping Quiet

Wherever she went

She could see faces twisted in disgust.

Eyes clouded with judgement;

Judging her character.

Whatever she did

People just ignored her

Lost in the screams inside her head

Buried in her own regrets

Frustrated at the expectations of the others

 Tired of being judged

Of being stripped of self respect

Tired of putting a strong front

When all her insides

Screamed at her to tell everyone

To forgo their lies

To enlighten them with the truth of her life

Oh! What had she done to deserve this?

Just put her family before her.

Thought about freeing her little brother

So what if she had to let go of her conscience…?

So what if she decided to sacrifice herself

In exchange for the laughter of her little brother…?

She closed her eyes once again

Took a deep breath and let go

Justifying herself was a burden

She chose not to carry…

Suffering in silence

Burning in the agony

Of having to keep quiet

Was the path she had chosen for herself…

Thanks a lot Lola_Bee. I am happy that you liked it. :)
This is very touching. There is a quiet dignity and courage to the girl's decisions, but it's also so tragic that she also feels stripped of her true self. A very poignant piece, and sadly quite relatable too.
