My Mother

My Mother

A Story by Shimae Parks

My Mother doesn't need to be my friend
she doesn't need to hold my hand
she doesn't need to tell me why
or think that I am in a lie
My Mother said to me
I want you to be unique
I don't want you to be
just hanging around anybody
My Mother tells me all the time
to wash the dishes
and take the clothes out on the line
I hope that she is watching
cause when I'm out on my own
I'll prove that I can be alone
waking up everyday
going to school
and going to play
seems just like what a kid
should do
not getting in trouble
and getting pursued
My Mother shows me the way
tells me son.. Daugther
I love you
not all the time I feel this way
sometimes I just want to say
Mother find your way..
but then I know that I can't say..
Just knowing how she is
Just knowing what she would say
keeps my me from saying
I can't believe that she raised me on her own
like supermom who has crazy powers
nothing like having my mom
even though I act a fool
sometimes running like a stupid fool
not knowing that it was for me
Just thinking how much she is changing me
walking down the street
imaging what it would be like
to finally find my life
looking back at her
she smiles and says keep on going
just a tear of just her knowing
I realize that this is it...
growing old seems like a fit
wishing I was back where I fit
just knowing that I can't sit
but my mother telling me
how its going to be
thinking that I'll just get away
but my mother saying thats okay
with a smile on her face
wondering why she is
smiling in the first place
what is she knowing
realizing that as I'm going
she knew all a long that
I was going to be something
and here I am
ready to venture off
to my college
making mom proud
thinking about how where I'm going
couldn't have happen with out my mom
here is to moms
for being and showing
here is to moms for
Guiding me
heres to moms for
pushing me to keep going
here is to moms for
not letting me get
off track
raise up your glass
blow the whistle
because
here is to moms for
not giving up and just knowing.

Oh here's to moms!!! Your writing is truly unique. You always write with such honesty, that it touches my heart. Your writing and your take on every day issues fascinate me. I can really relate to this poem. Mothers are truly our backbones, who help us, guide us, and mose important of all, they know us! :)) There are some suggestions that I would make:
#1 Break the lines, use more commas and full stops.
#2 in "Just knowing what she would say
keeps my me from saying " remove "my"
#3 In"like supermom who has crazy powers"add "a" before supermoms.
I really love the poem's visual structure. There are few who can make poems this visually appealing.
