The story of Bennett and EveA Story by Ginger Valentine1940s love story with a few twists. Done as a radio broadcast. This is KLOVE radio broadcasting live from Franklin, Indiana. I am your hostess Ginger Valentine. Dear listeners, with Valentine's Day quickly approaching, I have come to realize that Valentine's Day may not be a happy exp. for all this year. Perhaps this year finds you without someone special or even going thru a break-up. So with this in mind I searched the radio archives and found a story that may make you happy to be single this year. So grab a cozy blanket and maybe a glass of wine as I tell you the story of Bennett Morelli and Eve Looker. Our story begins in March 1940 with Bennett Morelli looking for a new love. Bennett is a handsome, charming man who is very pop- ular with the ladies. Unfortunately for them he is also a bit of a rotter, given to liking the seedier side of life and women of a certain sort. Seven years earlier, he former Mrs. Morelli cheated on her husband, then swiftly divorced him after several years of marriage, and left with their three children. Bennett by all accounts devastated by this turn of events, is now a man who drinks and dates to excess. Eve Looker by contrast, is a sweet, intelligent pretty gal who is most certainly not a woman of a certain sort. Eve currently single, and no stranger to heartbreak herself believes the man of her dreams just may be Bennett Morelli. There is also Shady Connie, but we will hear more of her later. Bennett meets Eve at her teller job at the local bank, where they have been flirting for several weeks, the attraction between them undeniable. Every Friday Bennett comes to cash his paycheck at Eve's window. This Friday finds him doing the same except this time he not only leaves with his money but Eve's phone number as well. April 1940 finds the new couple dating and Bennett asks Eve to meet his parents, because he believes Eve is the " one" he tells her. Although this happens in the first week of dating , Eve agrees to do this. Eve happier than ever, decides to have lunch with an old school chum, Philip, to tell him of her new romance. Unbeknownst to Eve, Bennett has agreed to meet a client at the same rest. at the same time. Upon arriving Bennett seeing Eve and Philip at lunch together storms out of the rest. Eve eager that Bennett not misunderstand what he has just seen, goes outside to explain that it is just lunch with a friend. Bennett however, refuses to believe her and tells her they are through. Eve stunned by Bennett's abrupt ending of their dating, decides she will see Bennett at his house the next day assuming he will have cooled down by then and everything will be worked out. Eve Eve unaware of how mad Bennett really is, apologizes and asks if they can work things out. Bennett steadfastly refuses and asks her to leave immediately. Shocked, confused and hurt by Bennett's rejection of her she tries one last time to speak with Bennett, only to find herself being escorted off the property by police and told if she comes back she will be arrested! It is now May of that year and Eve broken- hearted and devastated by Bennett's actions, finds herself depressed and unwilling to go to work or do anything. Eve convinced that Bennett was the "one " for her too receives a phone call that evening that sends Eve over the edge. The caller states that Bennett has renewed his romance with a former girlfriend and has even bought her a diamond ring. Eve unhinged by what she has been told drinks heavily that nite, and having forgotten that she has taken her sleeping pills accidentally takes them again. Her good friend and neighbor Phyllis, aware of Eve's depression goes to check on her only to find Eve unconscious. Eve, rushed to the hospital, is treated and released two days later. Eve now home, finds herself again tormented by Bennett's dating of another woman, and becomes mentally and emotionally unstable once again. She remains under the care of doctors for the next year, and by May of 1941 she is back on her feet and putting her life back together. Eve who has decided not to date again, now devotes herself to doing good works the rest of her days. She works part time at a children's orphanage, and at the local clinic where they treat illnesses of the mind. Bennett unaware of the damage done by his actions, has ditched the diamond ring girl and started dating Shady Connie. Connie, who is without a doubt a woman of a certain kind, talks Bennett into moving back to her home in California. It is now Valentines Day 1942, and Bennett returns home drunk and late which earns him Connie's wrath. Bennett skilled at turning a woman from mad to loving in mere seconds, works his magic on Shady Connie only to undo it moments later when in the courses of their intimacies, he calls her Eve. Furious Connie leaps from the bed and slugs Bennett in the stomach- - a .22 caliber slug to be exact. The police called by neighbors, arrive and after talking to Bennett, who has wisely chosen not to press charges against Shady Connie, is taken to the hospital where he recovers. Back home Bennett stewing about this new wrinkle in their romance, and not the sort of man that takes kindly to being shot, makes plans for Connie's ouster from his life. Under the guise of taking her to dinner he drives outside the city limits to a remote part of town and leaves Connie by the roadside along with a stray kitten telling her to find a new owner! Bennett laughing all the way back to town, goes to Hollywood where he dates chorus girls, wanna be actresses, and ladies of the nite. But life has decided that Eve and Bennett will share one last date. On Dec 1st 1945, Eve Looker passes away from a heart attack at her home in Franklin, Indiana. Also, on Dec. 1st 1945, Bennett Morelli trolling in a seedy part of L.A. is gunned down in his car, mistaken for a rival gun runner. Shady Connie is never seen or heard from again.
