Winter in your Eyes

Winter in your Eyes

A Poem by Sherri Moshman Paganos
"

a poem about loss of a relationship, a poem of contrasts

"

Winter in your Eyes

Lilacs in bloom, lavender vines,

Shyly offering their fragrance

To all who walk by

But I feel only winter in your eyes.

Petunias dot gardens and hillsides

Purple Jacarandas on city walks,

bushes of honeysuckle sweet

But for you, always winter in your eyes.

In the wind swaying among the pines

Dance fiery red poppies growing wild,

poplars gently shaking their new growth

But in your glance, only cold and ice.

As the yellow dahlia opens with a smile

And at night the crescent moon rises

Still you’re cold to the touch

And I see forever winter in your eyes.

Once again in the greenness of spring

You’ll prove anew the flatness of the earth,

As you disappear over the horizon

Vanishing in the whiteness of your world.

How elegantly put. I know about "winter in the eyes", having experienced it once. I wonder--do we sense it as much as we see it? You're quite a fine poet.

Your effusive imagery is creative & effective in conveying how it can feel when a person watches some "ex" lover being all energized & animated around other people, but never coming alive around me. It's like a huge slap to realize how this person's coldness is definitely directed ONLY at me. You get that across & yet without showing us what this narrator's reaction might be. I like that we can guess or imagine as we will, whether this narrator will finally get the hint & go get a life where people come alive in his/her company (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

For some people, in fact for many, the comfort, colour and scent of the four seasons, mean little or nothing. Seems they have dormant feelings about the outdoors, about life. How sad is that. Being outdoors is just wonderful. Apart from what's growing, there's the freedom of being outside. being able to use all the senses. Helps time to move a long very pleasantly, thank you. But not the same when you compare cool or cold emotions from another person however, one once warm . How people react to love, to caring with indifference IS as cold as Winter; surely wel need human reaction as much as we crave the sight of a beautiful garden or window box/tub. Anything becomes everything.
' Thought is grand, but - Feeling is better. ' Take care, keep safe.

Thanks so much for your comment Mattavelli
As I was reading this one, the word "saturnine" came to mind. The addressee here serves as a counterpoint for all of the floral beauties of the milder seasons. Some people, for their own reasons, are continually cold and withdrawn. They can't be happy. Unfortunately, neither can those close to them.

Thanks for your comment. Right, different characters and you can't change that.
I get the impression you were glad to see the back of her.
Cold in mind cold in kind.
I suppose relationships do break down, but the time to go is before the snow comes in.

Thanks, Paul, I enjoyed your comment.
ice job! I think the contrasts are sharp and well used. Love the work with the flowers, glad you included my good friends the trees ;) He has lost any feelings he had and the walk with him just gets colder and colder and as happens so many times in relationships in which a man leaves .. he does so thinking there is better elsewhere. A show of ignorance as he disappears off the edge of his flat world... I know too many couples in which this happens .. its called the 7 year itch. Putting the lilacs first with their distinct aroma put me there instantly ... with your protagonist .. lovely, sad poem of loss but clothed in a subtle acceptance of it as she keeps the glories of the natural world around her... be well! thanks for sharing .. mighty fine rhythm and rhyme and as well says i! ;)

To have winter/ice in your eyes when the sun is shining and the flowers are in bloom is very sad; however your imagery is lovely, descriptive. It seems that this kind of aura will never end; I liked the repetition of the attitude.

Your quite welcome!
A poem that stimulates the senses. Beautiful floral description and the contrast was felt. Winter in the eyes is hurtful in a relationship. That coldness penetrates the soul. Nicely penned and welcome to WC Sherri.
