Do You Love Me?

Do You Love Me?

A Poem by Shelley Warner

Do You Love Me?

I haven’t heard the words,

though we’ve been together

two years now.

I know you were hesitant,

after losing your wife of

fifty years.

So I understand.

Do you love me?

When I came out of your bathroom, laughing:

John, you’ve pulled the beginning tissue

of every tissue box on your shelf!

you answered,

I did it for you in case you ran out of

one box and needed another.

Do you love me?

When we came back from you taking

me out to breakfast,

and I said I was sleepy,

we lay on your bed,

with your arm over me.

I fell asleep for thirty minutes.

When I awoke, I asked if you slept too.

No, you answered.

But you had stayed with me.

Do you love me?

When we remembered our puppy love,

way back when we were thirteen,

and we laughed recalling

the kisses we stole in the back seat

of the church youth leader’s car,

you said,

Well I was the first boy you kissed

and hopefully, I’ll be the last.

Do you love me?

When we enjoy intimacy,

and I say,

You keep bringing me joy,

You say,

It makes me happy

to make you happy.

Do you love me?

Yes.

And I love you.

Awww, sweet words
A very Saudade poem, i could feel the eccentric sense of sentiments and nostalgia while reading it. A very cherubic and glorious poem expressing such raw emotions. Absolutely wonderful!

Endearing write Shelley. I am so pleased you have found love and happiness again with John after your loss. Action, far more important than words when it comes to loving. How easy and quick it is to utter three words. Takes far more time and effort to demonstrate real love. I think you have struck lucky here and I am wondering what a special weekend will bring :) Honest poetry. Delightful read.

Thank you :)
How we wait with bated breath, just to hear those three words! The scenarios you depicted were wonderfully expressed and filled me with the euphoric thrill of love.

just marvellous, humorous and touching and very honest . we all want to hear the words when really the actions show so much better . but then to hear the words too... sublime ...love it.

These deeply personal words reflect the beauty of poetry in the purity of its art form. These are the most human moments defining love. Thank you Shelley for sharing your work with us and the truth from where it draws its inspiration.
