DANDELIONSA Poem by MJDandelions
Dandelions were nothing more than mere weeds But every spring there was a fresh batch in bloom And you would pluck them half stemmed from the earth they grew, Offering them in a hand held bouquet wrapped in ear to ear grins.
Sitting Crisscross applesauce; I thanked you shyly Pulled one from the batch and weaved it in my hair.
You would scamper back across the playing field to be greeted By the stealing of your hat and the sneer from your peers.
The flossy sisters, giggled and teased me, K-I-S-S-I-N-G They sang on queue to the -so and so in a tree song But I quickly proceeded to make crowns; from the gift of sunshine you brought me, To adorn their curls, instead of my lifeless locks The melodies ended, my checks resumed to regular color.
We brushed shoulders for the next ten years Pretending dandelions did not exist between us Careful to never stray from our pack
But April rain continued to plant dandelions In the fields that you played left of center And where I sat quietly, writing poetry, c-stance against a maple.
Many of days I watched you play nine innings, And then exit the field upon your winnings. But this time I lost track of the time with in my rhymes, When the bat cracked the last home run of the season
One- snap Two-snap Three-snap…
12 snaps and you reached me
With a hand held bouquet of dandelions, Wrapped in an ear to ear grin. I laughed with the gesture to join me You smiled and briefly Squatting as you tore, twisted, and tied Molding and shaping a bouquet into a crown You placed it upon my head and whispered,
You will always be my dandelion queen~
you leaned in, Kissed my lips, and whistled as you walked away
...And all my heart could do was hum the melody- Me and you sitting in a tree K-i-s-s-i-n-g © 2011 MJ |
