I Always Knew

I Always Knew

A Poem by Shelly Araujo

I Always Knew

I wrote these words so long ago
But only on my heart.
Words of you and words that knew
My feelings when I did not.

Occasionally they’d rise to meet
A quiet moment I’d found,
Or peek through at news of you
And the life you'd found.

Always planned to put them down
But never could I start.
My heart was true to the time we knew
Even when I could not.

Pushed aside all that I felt
Even from the start,
Wouldn’t let the love you gave
Melt the numbness of my heart.

Now I understand the gift you gave
Of love was true and pure.
Now I understand that I’m
The reason you’re not here.

Had so many chances to
Tell you what I felt.
Times when all I had to do
Was take that leap of faith.

I pray someday I’ll get the chance
To tell you that I knew
And that I felt the same way too
But was unable to

Separate the pain of life and
Grab a hold of you
It’s too late now but still
Somehow I think you always knew.

Very poignant write Shelley...this is such an old story, but usually it is the man who can't commit or express his true feelings.

When you get to be my age, you REALLY look back and see where the road not taken has led to misunderstandings and lonliness. Yet...on the other hand...our inner pysche is sending a warning that in the long run...this is not to be.

Only time will tell if that road led us to safety or heartache.

Good Job!

My God! I hope you get to one day as well! This was filled with such emotion and what sounds like regret from past opportunities. I was already sad, but this plummeted me into depression; which is the sigh of a good writer. Someone who can convey emotions to the reader. Great write Shelly!

My greatist fear is this very thing happening to me, today I just experienced the realization that my time to express my feelings is running out and I cant fight the voice in my head that tells me not to disturb the way things are currently. Thank you for sharing your emotions in this poem

That is beautiful and sad. wow. I love the part where your heart knew your true feelings, but your mind was repressing it, and every once in awhile your heart would penetrate the silence.Very well written.
