I screamed, I knew I shouldn’t have come to school on a Saturday. It was a stupid dare to accept. I ran into the nearest open classroom and locked the door behind me. Pulling out the slip of paper concealed in my pocket I unfolded it and re-read my dare. “Double dare to give you a scare, Saturday night in pale moonlight, come to Noble High School, and face the ghoul.”
My name is Shela Lian and I’m in the 10th grade at Noble High school in North Berwick Maine. I live just one town over in Berwick. I am 5 foot 1 and 100 pounds. Long brown hair, and grey-blue eyes. I am also athletic in a way. I liked my look.
But I also have a stupid old habit that I have had for a long time. Give me a dare, almost any dare and I will do it. Unless it something sick. My locker at school in known as the “Dare drop-off center”. Just write down a dare on a piece of paper and stick it in my locker and more then likely I will take the dare.
But this dare I should have turned down. Our school has had an old myth. The myth that there is a ghoul that thrives on Saturday night in the school. When the school was first made in 2001 a girl got a dare to go into the school and she was never seen again. No one really knows if this myth was true or not.
But now someone, SOMEONE chose me to be the bait to find out. Who did this to me, I do not know, but I went with the dumb dare.
I had gotten to the school at 9:00pm. A friend was nice enough to give me a ride. She refused to come into the school with me though.
I went up to the double doors and surprisingly found them unlocked. I went in and walked around the whole school once. Everything had gone ok and there was no sign of a ghoul. I had felt pretty good about doing this dare and was walking back to the school doors. That’s when it all changed. I heard a series of crashes, and a dark figure dashed to the nearest doors that lead outside. It paused at the doors then dashed off again.
I ran to the doors and desperately tried to open the doors. They were locked. The thing, ghoul, it, whatever it was dashed behind me and I freaked and ran.
That’s where I was now. Locked in an empty classroom where the red numbers of the clock read 10:45pm. I took my time to look around the room and noticed it belonged to my favorite teacher of the 9th grade. It was Mrs. Blouch’s room. The un-square room still had calendar pictures all over the room and two computers buzzing in the back round. The sliding fabric wall was covered with posters. After I took in my surroundings it was 10:52pm. I went over to the door and peeped out into the blackness of the white team, freshman pod. It was empty as far as I could tell. I slipped out of the classroom sad to leave it behind.
As I walked quietly in the halls I saw nothing. Whatever it was that was after me seemed gone. I had just gotten down the stairs and into what’s called the town square near the cafeteria, when I heard the “ding” of the elevator door. Something grabbed my wrist just as the clock read 11:05pm…
My eyelids fluttered open and I vagley remembered passing out. I think it was from fear but I really don’t know. Automatically my eyes went to the clock. 11:47pm. I was fully awake now and sat up with a start. I was no longer in the town square. I saw shelves of book and knew I was in the library. Over in the corner I saw the thing sitting there in a chair, reading a book. That itself was weird but not nearly as weird as when it talked. It looked over at me and saw me awake.
“I see you’re awake, how are you feeling?” It asked me setting down the book..
“Wha?…..” I said in a daze. The voice sounded very familiar. It was a guy.
“I asked you if you were alright” he said again.
He was close. To close. The ghoul was going to kill me…just like that other girl…
“Why would you care?” I managed to choke out trying to hide my fear. I failed that badly. I closed my eyes wishing this was just a dream, just a bad dream.
“Why would I care?” He repeated as I felt his arms wrap around my waist. I wanted to scream but before I could, he kissed me. I opened my eyes in shock and saw it was Alex. Alex the one I have known for five years. Alex the one that had been behind the ghoul mask. Alex the one that held me in an embrace and kissing me now, was behind this all…
Monday at school it had gone around that I had gone to see the “ghoul”. In math class later that day a girl came up to me, and asked me if was true. I looked over at Alex who was sitting at the desk next to me and we just smiled.
