Prologue

Prologue.

She took my face into her hands as a tear fell down her cheek.

‘I have to go out’ she whispered.

‘What? Where are you going?’ I asked urgently.

‘Just out sweetie’ she replied.

‘Don’t leave me. Please don’t leave me’ I begged her.

She kissed me on the top of my head and rested her forehead against mine.

‘I have to though’ she mutters.

She pulled away and her eyes found mine.

‘But Ruth, if you remember one thing from this conversation, remember this. When you find a glimmer of happiness in this world, there is always someone who will try and destroy it’ she wiped a tear away from her face.

‘But mother, when I find that person, what do I do?’ I asked her.

‘You do everything in your power to stop them, because they’re not worth your tears, nor you scars.’ I sniffed back the sorrow.

‘I have to go now’ she whispered again.

‘Mother, please don’t go.’ I sobbed, but she ignored me.

‘I’ll be back’

She lied. 
And with that she left, not just me but everything behind. And I saw her no more, she didn’t come back, she didn’t even make it to the place she needed to go to, or so I heard. But I remembered what she said. 
I have to keep hold of that happiness, no matter who gets in my way.
Or, as I soon realized, no matter what.
