PrologueA Chapter by PatriciaWe were walking home from a day in town carrying at least half a dozen shopping bags each. Jenny by my side with her blonde hair flying in the wind and me with my curly brown hair bobbing up and down with each step that I took. We carried on walking and came up to Oakland road. we followed it down until we came up to the subway and then headed under ground. We had been silent since we started walking back so i thought i'd break it by saying,"well, that was a fun shopping trip." She looked over me and smiled,"yeah it was fun. we should do this sort of thing more often, you know, sister bonding and stuff." Glad that we were no longer in silence I said,"I'd like that seen as though you are always out with your boyfriend or something and leaving me in the house with the moaning mother,"I laughed. There was couple of minutes silence before we heard heavy footsteps that sounded like someone running come from the other end of the tunnel. I hesitated for a second wondering why someone would be running down here when I saw that Jenny was still walking and not taking any notice so I followed her example and carried on. Then a figure appeared at the end of the tunnel running in. It was hard to see him for there were no lights down here and he was wearing strictly black so the darkness swallowed him whole. He was still running through the tunnel heading straight for us. Jenny pushed me to the side so we were out of his way but instead of carrying on, he changed direction so that he was heading for us again. I panicked. I didn't know what to do and there wasn't really much that I could do. I looked around trying to find a way to escape but my only options were the openings at each end, the one that we were closest to was obscured by the runner and the other opening was too far away for judging the speed that the runner was going at, if I tried to run he would catch me and I don't think he was even going his fastest. I saw a glint of light in the corner of my eye and turned my head to find the source. I the realized that it was the runner and he had retrieved a knife from his pocket. With one last, swift step, he was in front of Jenny. Wasting no time at all, he thrust the knife into her stomach and then removed it as she slumped to the floor and passed out. I gasped in horror at what I had just seen. He then walked over to me. I closed my eyes and felt and tear slide down my face as I prepared myself for the knife that I knew was going to slit into my skin any second now. I waited and waited but it didn't come. I opened my eyes and let out my breath, it was then that a hand grasped my right shoulder and my attacker thrust the knife into my left side. I screamed in pain as he removed the knife and then let go of my shoulder. I curled over in pain as I watched him fled the scene. When I woke up, all I could see was a blinding light. I tried to sit up but my side erupted in pain so I gave up and slumped back. I looked around as my vision adjusted and realized that I was in a hospital bed. I heard a rustling sound come from beside me and immediately flipped my head around to find the source of the sound. To my surprise, my mum was sat in the chair that they always put next to the bed for visitors, her cheeks wet with tears. A few seconds passed and then her arms flung around my neck as she hugged me saying,"Oh my God, honey, are you okay?" I looked at her in surprise and said,"i'm fine, my side hurts,"I then fully realised where I was and asked,"why am I in hospital?" She looked at me confused and then said,"Don't you remember? You were found under Oakland road a couple of hours ago after you were stabbed. A local found you and called the ambulance. Police are trying to find evidence as to who did this too you." I let it all sink in and then asked,"What about Jenny?"after I realized that she hadn't mentioned her name once in her little speech. Mum just looked at me and then bowed her head. There could have been a million things that would have made her bow her head and nothing specific so I asked again,"where is she? is she ok?" "Louise I am so sorry but she's gone. She was found dead on the scene and you were barely alive." I let it all sink in hating myself. I felt tears start to roll down my face as I sat in silence, remembering the memories that we had endured together and realizing that I wouldn't get to share another memory with her again. © 2012 PatriciaAuthor's Note
