Mermaid's Grace

Mermaid's Grace

A Poem by Shayna
"

I wrote this in the summer of 2005 I think. It's supposed to be about the transformation into a mermaid a girl goes through. Not sure exactly why I wrote it. It's kind of bad, though, and I'm sorry about that. :P

"

Standing at the edge of a lake, I stare into the depths
Entrancing, trapped in the sight
Birds of the forest chirp quietly, watching, waiting
One naked foot dips into the waters
It's cool and inviting
Another step and both feet are encased in clear liquid
Slowly, gracefully, I step farther in until the water reaches my waist
I close my eyes and feel the water rushing past me, as if I'm not there
I make no difference to the water; it isn't affected by my presence, but I, by its
Soothing waves lap my stomach, filling me with inner peace
Opening my eyes once more, I raise my arms above me, bring them together, and dive in the water before me
It rushes over my head, soaking my hair
I swim farther, deeper, into the unknown
I go in deeper, deeper, down and down until I feel the bottom
Then something happens
I feel a twitch
A small movement in my legs
Would I soon feel pain?
Should I surface?
No, I am to wait
It feels like hours before it happens at last
I almost expect it
My legs are drawn together and bound into one
A fin swishs where my legs once extended
Suddenly I can breath
It's so mysterious
How is any of it possible?
But the thoughts are only there for seconds before I swim away
And I know this is where I belong

Loved the imagery! Mermaids are my favorite myth, sirens too. :) The last line is fantastic. I always felt more at home in the water.

About
Ever since I was a kid, I loved two things: reading and writing. I read as much as I could and wrote stories that generally weren't good. As I got older, though, I got better and soon learned to write.. more..
