Lurking

Lurking

A Poem by Shayla Sayer

the shadows lurk
they're always here
they wait and watch
as i comb my hair

i fear the darkness within me
visible only in mirrors--
my screams and whimpers are not my own
but all my reflection hears

the shadows stare
out from my mirror at night
but it is at twilight that they assert themselves
for they thrive in the dimming light

i cover the mirror with a coat
my rain jacket--put to better use--
yet the shadows leak through
and around my neck i tighten the noose.

...but now, the day is here
there is no noose, and as i comb my hair
i meet the eyes of my reflection
and see the shadows lurking there.
