Outside Looking InA Poem by ShawnaWhen she smiles, her eyes light up like the brightest sun.
There are fine lines around them though her young life has just begun.
She had to become a woman at an adolescent age.
She never had a childhood, read a book, or wrote a page.
There were stars in her eyes, a magnificent constellation.
She had big dreams too but they were crushed by seperation.
Taken away from her parents, she thought they had cared.
But the social worker said they were careless and pharmaceutically impaired.
So what if she took care of the other little girl in her home?
It was her little sister and she'd watch after her 'til they were grown.
It was a vow she had taken since the day her mother stopped,
And the charges against her father, well, they were never dropped.
So she would wash and comb and braid little sister's hair.
She would play dolls with her so she would never know how her life was so unfair.
Now the day had come when they would seperate the two.
A sweltering summer day in the middle of June.
Her heart was broken when they took her astray,
Fearing she was seeing little sister for the last time that day.
Tears were flowing as the state workers pulled them by the arms,
"Come now little girls, we mean you no harm!"
The light in her eyes became dim and her little hands shook.
The only thing she ever loved and cared for, they took.
The last words I heard her speak was a stab to the heart.
"I'll come for you little sister, they'll never keep us apart."
No one knows the kind of pain you can create, whatever your sin.
No one knows how much it hurts to be on the outside looking in. © 2012 Shawna |
