"Well we finally made it, Court. We're sophomores!" Shawn said to Courtney as they walked through the doors of Nicholson High School.
"Don't get too excited. We still have two more years until we graduate. Well, I have two more years. You? Maybe two or three...or four." Courtney said to Shawn while smiling.
"Hey! I'm getting my diploma right after you!"
"Yeah. That's exactly what I said!"
"Courtney!"
Courtney took off and ran down the halls to her locker. Shawn was close behind. Nobody looked at them weird because they all knew that it was just Shawn and Courtney. It was normal for them. Courtney finally reached her locker. She started to open just as Shawn came up to her.
"I think I find it weirder that people don't stare at us when we run around like idiots." Shawn said.
"Their just used to us being us." Courtney stated.
"Yeah but if I saw two best friends who have been best friends since the second grade run down the halls like that, I would stare."
"Shawn, we've been friends since the first grade?"
"Really?!?! Because I clearly remember when I first talked to you at your seventh birthday party..." Shawn said. Courtney started laughing. Then Shawn realized. "Court, please don't do that. That really makes me worried that I don't know everything about us."
"I'm sorry. It's just funny to see you deep in thought."
"Oh, well, I'm sorry you don't get to see that often."
Then the bell rang. It was time for first period. Math. Shawn and Courtney walked into their class. Shawn sat behind Courtney as Jeremiah Davis, a boy in their class, sat next to Courtney.
"Hey, Shawn, Courtney. Did you hear about Amy's party this Friday?" He said.
"Nope." Courtney said.
"Nope." Shawn repeated.
"Seriously? Everyone's been talking about it." Jeremiah said.
"But it's the first day of school." Courtney stated.
"But I still can't believe you haven't heard of it."
"Okay. Well, I guess we'll know now." Shawn said.
"Okay. So Amy is having a huge party at her house. It's sorta like an end of summer party I guess you could say. And you know Amy, she's totally rich. A big mansion with a huge pool."
"Cool. What time?" Courtney asked.
"5 till 10:30." Jeremiah stated.
"Cool." Courtney said.
"We'll be there." Shawn said.
Jeremiah looked at both of them and smirked, "Great."
Later that day after school, Courtney decided to IM Amy about her party.
courttt x3: heyy, amy. i can't wait for your party.
aymeeTHATSme: me neither! its gonna be awesome!
courttt x3: of course it'll be!!
aymeeTHATSme: hey, shawn is gonna be there right?
courttt x3: of course. why? do u still have that crush on him?
aymeeTHATSme: no, i'm not asking for me. i'm asking for u.
courttt x3: y?
aymeeTHATSme: it's about time u guys get together. its been 8 years.
courttt x3: so.
aymeeTHATSme: so thats why i'm setting u guys up.
courttt x3: whoa whoa whoa. there is no way you are!!!
aymeeTHATSme: y not?
courttt x3: because he is my friend. that's it!!!
aymeeTHATSme: thats not what jere saw.
courttt x3: what do u mean?
aymeeTHATSme: well, i'm not gonna say to much but...jere saw u and shawn pass in the hall way today. u and him said hi to each other but after that u kept walking but shawn still had his head turned around at you and he was smiling at you. jere saw the whole thing.
courttt x3: that doesn't mean anything. we friends! he probably just does it on impulse.
aymeeTHATSme: whatever. don't listen to me. but if you really want my opinion it's better to act on it now then regret it later on.
courttt x3: well i don't wanna risk our friendship.
aymeeTHATSme: okay. do want you want. well, see ya tomorrow and at my party!!
courttt x3: yeah, bye.
Courtney signed off of AIM. Meanwhile, Jeremiah called Shawn.
"What's up?" Shawn asked.
"Hm. Nothing much. Just thinking about Courtney." Jeremiah said.
"Courtney?!?! Why Courtney? I thought you got over her."
"I did. I was just thinking about her for you."
"For me? Why for me?"
"Hey, she's going to Amy's party right?"
"Yeah, of course. But why for me?"
"Because it's about time you and her get together!"
"What?!?! No way! We're just friends."
"Yeah, and you have been for eight years! Make your move on her. Now!"
"What if I don't like her?"
"Oh but you do! I saw the way you looked at her in the hallway today."
"What? What are you talking about?"
"They way you smiled at her."
"We were just saying hi."
"But you kept smiling! I saw it!"
"It meant nothing!"
"Whatever. I just think you and her should get together now. You'll regret it later on."
"Jere, seriously. just let me handle this."
"So you're gonna ask her out?"
"No!"
"Whatever, just don't take your anger out on me when she someone else asks her out."
"I won't because I don't like her. I mean, I like her, but just as a friend."
"Like I said before, whatever. So I gotta go. I'll see you and Courtney at Amy's party."
"Yeah, bye."
Both Jeremiah and Shawn hung up. Shawn thought about him and Courtney being together for the rest of the night.
The next day at school Shawn decided to talk to Courtney before first period. He was leaning against the lockers as she got her books.
"Okay so, me and Jeremiah had the weirdest conversation last night." He said.
"Really? About what?" Courtney asked.
"Well, to be honest, it was about...you."
Courtney stopped what she was doing and looked at him. She sighed right before she said, "Was he telling you that you and I should hook up?"
"Yeah, actually. How'd you know?"
"Because Amy was telling me the same thing."
"Oh, really? That's...weird. So I was just wondering--"
"No worries, Shawn. I don't want to either. We're just friends."
"What? Oh, yeah, Friends. Yeah. I-I didn't want to...either."
Then the bell rang signaling the start of first period.
"Come on. Before we're late." Courtney said.
"Yeah." Shawn said as he looked at her with sad eyes.
For the rest of Thursday and all of Friday Shawn tried to be happy around Courtney. He tried to act normal but he just couldn't take it anymore. He was going to tell her at Amy's party.
Shawn and Courtney arrived at Amy's party together. Just like they normally would. Courtney was about to walk towards Amy and her other friends when Shawn grabbed her arm.
"I need to talk to you later, okay? Meet me by the pool at eight." He said.
"Sure." Courtney replied as she walked away towards her friends.
"So...how's your date going?" Amy asked.
"Yeah, you two are totally in love!" Megan, one of their friends, said.
"What? We are not on a date." Courtney replied.
"But you're still--"
"No, we're not in love either! Just leave Shawn alone. Let's not talk about me and him right now. Let's just have fun."
"Yo, Jere, I've got something to tell you." Shawn said to Jeremiah.
"Ooh! You and Courtney have finally hooked up!" Jeremiah said.
"No...not yet." Shawn said with a smile.
"No way! I thought you didn't like her!"
"I didn't, at least not in that kind of way. But after you mentioned it I started thinking about her and I realized that hey, maybe I do like her."
"That's awesome, man! So are you gonna tell her?"
"Yeah, tonight."
"Ooh, I gotta see this."
Shawn smiled and he couldn't stop. He was so excited to tell her but as eight o'clock got closer and closer he started getting nervous. He went out by the pool at 7:55. Courtney arrived ten minutes later.
"Hey, sorry I'm late." She said.
"What do you mean, it's only 8:05 and I only said that I'd meet you here at eight. I've only been waiting in agony for the past five minutes!" Shawn said dramatically. Courtney laughed.
"That's what I love about you, Shawn. You're great sense of humor."
"Well, you know what they say..."
"No, what?"
"I don't know either. But something I always wondered...who's the "they" in that question?"
"The people I guess."
"What people?"
Courtney smiled. "Shawn are you stalling?"
"Maybe."
"Just tell me."
Shawn sighed. "It's not that easy."
"Is it about what Jeremiah and Amy said? Shawn, I told you. I don't want to either. You're not the only one." Courtney smiled.
"But...what if...I...want to?"
"What?"
"What if I want to get together with you?"
"But Shawn...I...heh...what?"
"Courtney! I'm not saying it again!"
"No. You don't have to. But Shawn, we can't."
"Why not?"
"We're best friends. And only best friends."
"So. There's no law saying you can't date your best friend."
"But I don't wanna date you."
"But I wanna date you." Shawn said as he took a step closer.
"Shawn, listen to yourself. What's wrong with you?"
"Nothing. After Jeremiah talked to me I started thinking about us and I realized that--"
"You like me. As more than a friend."
"Yeah."
"A lot?"
"Yeah."
"Alright then. Kiss me."
"What?"
"If you like me so much then kiss me."
"F-fine I will!"
Shawn started leaning in as so did Courtney. Amy and Jeremiah were watching from inside the house. Just before their lips touched Shawn paused. Courtney noticed this and opened her eyes and pulled away. Shawn also pulled away.
"I...I-I don't want to kiss you. I'm sorry." He said.
"It's alright, Shawn. I knew you wouldn't."
"I guess since everyone kept mentioning us hooking up I guess I kinda got too used to the idea and it made me think I actually liked you. I thought I did, I swear. But just before I was gonna kiss you...I realized what was happening. And the truth is...I don't like you as more than a friend, Court. I'm sorry."
"It's alright. I just had to do something to wake you up. You were talking crazy, man!"
Shawn laughed, "Yeah, I guess I sorta took advantage of our friendship. I'm sorry, again."
"Hey, don't blame yourself. Blame Jeremiah and Amy." Courtney said. They both looked over at the house and saw Jeremiah and Amy looking at them then Jeremiah and Amy quickly looked away and began fake talking to each other. Shawn and Courtney laughed.
"Yeah. It is their fault. Let's not let anyone do that again. Besides, we have too many good times as just friends." Shawn said.
"Yeah, like right now." Courtney replied.
"Huh?" Shawn asked. Just then Courtney pushed Shawn into the pool. As he came back up she started laughing.
"That's what I was talking about!" She said.
"Courtney!" Shawn quickly got out of the pool. Courtney started running and Shawn was close behind. They ran through the house and back towards the pool. Courtney stopped in Amy's backyard behind the pool. Shawn was right behind her and he stopped also.
"Did I ever tell you that I think I find it weirder that people don't look at us as we run around like idiots?" Shawn asked. Courtney laughed.
"Come on. There's only two more hours left of this party. Let's make the best of it." Courtney said.
