Self-Torture

Self-Torture

Have you ever found yourself waiting for something that will never come? Like, you know, deep down, that the object or person that you are waiting for will never show up, but you still wait? This, is what I like to call self-torture.

The hope that builds up inside of you during every single agonizing second of waiting is a form of torture. Torture that is far worse than anything known to you or your body. And your not ready for it. You are not ready to be hurt.
Not all wounds have to be physical, you know.

I tell you this with complete confidence that you cannot and will not stop this purgatory of your own making. I do it too. I can't stop. Neither can you.

This is a doomed species. The world, the creatures on it, and all the natural disasters are not what you should fear. They are not your enemies. They will not kill you. You are only a danger to yourself. You are your own enemy.

You will kill yourself without knowing it. Not by taking a blade to your wrist, not by a strong rope, and not by jumping from the highest place you know. The murder will come from your thoughts. From your feelings. From your hope.

That is the only death
you should
fear.

I follow your first bit about the torture of waiting but in my opinion your jump to this leading to a doomed species is too great to make this an idea you can run with. I think that are many alternative scenarios that readers will relate to more easily.
You have definitely got promise and should persevere with your writing.
Cheers,
Alan

Pithy writing. There is an old expression, “the heart never fills its wanting.” You captured that in your essay. You have a gift for narration. Keep writing.
