According to a report given by the National Council of Advanced Economic Research, engineering is the most preferred course in India. This is because most people think that having a degree in engineering can easily get you a job. Although this is true to quite an extent, but circumstances have changed and just being an engineer may not be sufficient to hold up in this highly competitive world.

However, if your aim is to pursue B.Tech course, there are several other options that you can explore. A number of courses have emerged in the recent past because of the boom in technology. Biotechnology, biochemistry, bioinformatics etc. are subjects which offer a lot of opportunities. According to HT Campus, a section of the leading publishing house Hindustan Times, the top biotechnology colleges in India are:

1.     1. IIT Kharagpur offers  M.Tech in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering

2.          2. Hindustan University offers B.E. in Biotechnology

3.          3.Thapar University in Patial, provides courses with full fledged B.tech syllabus to give you the best skills.

4.          4. Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology offers B.E. Biotechnology

5.         5.University School of Biotechnology, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi offers Doctor of Philosophy in Biotechnology.

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary subject which applies technology to living science. Students of biotechnology can find employment in a variety of fields such as environment conservation, pharmaceutical research and generic medicines, tissue culture and cell culture, food processing industries, waste management, production of genetically modified organisms, drug designing, research on alternate sources of energy etc.

If you are a science student and have done your graduation in the same background, you can look at a post graduate programme in Biotechnology too. There are several colleges which will offer you M.Sc Biotechnology courses. Entrance examinations are conducted by the Jawaharlal Nehru University on behalf of DBT in May every year. This will lead you to lectureship or start your own business with the skills you have learnt.

Nevertheless, you must remain clear and focussed on what you want to do right from the start. You may find it difficult initially, but the more you read and research about the subjects and colleges available, the more clarity you get.
