The Wall

The Wall

A Poem by ShameemAkhtar

The wall stood.
Dark. Tall. Menacing.
Like the towering figure of her father.
Solid. Impenetrable. Unmovable.
Like the norms of society.
Rigid. Intolerant. Uncompromising.

Alisa stood. The wall ahead. The car on the other side.

One step. Just one step, the voice urged, at its encouraging best.

One step, Alisa thought.

The car to freedom stood nearby.

But the wall. The wall in between.

Ever-present. Ominous. Towering.

Romeo. Juliet.
Romeo. The wall. Juliet.

Unsavoury bone in the soup.

Iqbal. Alisa.
Iqbal. John. Alisa.

Unsavoury bone in the soup.

The wall. John.
The wall. Her father.
The wall. His ego…

The car. The car to freedom.
The way to Iqbal.
Dreams. Utopia. Iqbal.

The car. The car to freedom
The road to destiny.
The way to her dreams.

Car. Dreams. Iqbal.
Alisa weds Iqbal.
The car without petrol.

A haze. Dreams broken. Shards.
Sharpened edges. Screeching brakes.
Cut finger.

The union that would never be.
Children that would never see the day.

For there it was. The wall.
Tall. As it had always been.
Unrelenting.
Unyielding. As it stands today
And will always be…

Dreams.
Hopes.
Desires.

Nightmares.
Despair.
And despaired.

Alisa. The passenger.
Iqbal. The destiny.

The car.
The car.
The means.

But again. There it was.
Like always.

Dark. Tall. Towering.

The wall.
The barrier.
The end.

Very sad and romantic, in a Shakesperian way. Romeo and Juliet indeed. I loved it.

I liked how you described the obstacles in one's life through the wall. A sad ending at last "The wall. The barrier. The end." I liked it. Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.
