The Arrival of Autumn

The Arrival of Autumn

A Story by Shadi Raeisdanaei

Her feet stumble on the broken branches lying on the ground. Her lips are blue and cracked. Her figure thin and weak. Her cheeks are wet from the anticipation of meeting him. The tall trees begin to clear and she sees him. She silently takes a seat among the dirt and mud. Her hands are shaking and she pulls her sweater over her fragile fingers.
"Hello." Her voice is hoarse, she has not spoken in days. The silence greets her back. "I haven't seen you in-" her body shakes from the sobs. His hand does not rub her back soothingly.  She lays the single rose beside him and looks up at the sky.
"You know the guy in the apartment across from us? Don't get angry, okay? We were in the elevator and he tried to kiss me." she awaits a reaction, yet she receives none, "I broke his nose." She takes a deep breath and rubs at her eyes. "I haven't slept in days after your friends cornered me in the alley. They're a bunch of b******s."
The trees whistle along with the wind. He does not move. Her brown hair flies in the winds and the cold, harsh air nips at her face. She wants nothing more than to go home, but home is wherever he is.
"I want to stay with you. Not just for tonight, I mean until the sun swallows this planet or when God comes to take me to you." He says nothing. Her tears roll down her cheeks and fall onto the gravestone.  Her small body gasps for a breath and she lays her head on top of the stone, trying to locate where his beating heart would have been.
The sky roars for her sorrow and loneliness. The clouds cry with her as she patiently awaits death. Autumn has finally caught up with her. It has been a year since she felt safe, happy. A year since he left her.

Thank you very much :)
Absolutely captivating, pulled me in and I even found myself letting out a sigh for the poor girl. It's amazing what power your words can create. Great job.
