The KnifeA Poem by Shaan AhmedThe Knife By Shaan AhmedClose your eyes, go to sleep Listen to the melody and fall deep Dream of fireflies that light up in the night Pretend that everything is going to be all right
Cold feet, you feel the breeze Calm down be at ease What they say won’t haunt you tonight The dark is your best friend, not the light
Promise me, you’ll wipe your eyes Because I know they deserved the skies So desirous, so dazed Tell me why the world couldn’t keep you amazed
Now you hold the knife close to your heart Nothing left, just an inch apart Push it down, says the mind You’re not going to leave anyone behind
A tear breaks free as you finally decide The world is broken, at least you tried You push the knife down, it’s time to let go How painful is death? Maybe now you’ll know
You feel the skin, let it cut through But you feel no pain, so you let it come to view And there stood two, with their hands above your chest Side by side, you realize you’re blessed
It seems you forgot You’re all they’ve got They lean closer with their bleeding hands Wipe your tears, we still have plans
Mom and dad, please stop being sad The world isn’t dead, I really am glad Mom and dad, I’m sorry for the mark The light is my friend, not the dark
