The Story of UsA Poem by Samantha HartleyA love poemThe story of us has no end. Born on shaky grounds above planted seeds Pudgy stumps of flesh attempt a stand, stumbling To make known our coos of blah blah blahs- Buckling rules bind us- Time, space, and language are Sanity appropriately dressed in sensibility For the occasion of living, a kind-shielded umbrella From the burdens of the abstract. But the times when asleep For a night or forever We kick off our useless bodies to enter A dream-world where these rules not apply, Where sometimes we are clumsy children Floating around in an imagined abyss made-up Of matter drawn from the essence of the unknown. Anything is possible. Then we wake. Real fairies skipping to school to learn About time, space, and language- Survival of the quick-wittest, now sanity Is the planted seed from which we grow and Be children no longer and no longer clumsy, but now Penciled-in lunch dates at whatever o’clock In so and so restaurant with raved reviews, Huddled together under an umbrella sharing a meal. But the times when in love... We find ourselves on some strange, deviated path Rules bleed out of the book soaked from first rainfall- The umbrella is gone. Every learned thing vanishes, Time is eternity, yet not nearly enough Space is obsolete, for no matter where you are You are always close to this one particular person. Language reforms back into the blahs that silenced us before And much like hands in water, our bodies Are saturated, taking it all in like a vitamin. No words are suitably dressed enough to attend this event All are denied at the door but us, Love simply brings dreams to life. When in love Dreams are now accessible: they have come true, We know this because it was in our dreams where we first met. The story of us has no end. © 2014 Samantha Hartley |
