Old Poems Don’t Work

Old Poems Don’t Work

A Poem by sL

Tell me what I f*****g need
F*****g fix me
Fix this
Please
Sometimes,
when I need to feel understood,
I read my old poems and relate to them
Those are moments
I’ve survived
But tonight,
I read them all and
It’s
Not
Working
Maybe I need a good cry
Empty
alone
F*****g autocorrect changes alone to alive
F**k
Maybe asleep
I need to sleep
But I sleep enough
I just want to cry
No need to explain it
Just know it
Get it
I’m empty tonight
Hate
F**k
F**k
this

Hmmm … this seems to be the angst of someone very young, who has not fully emotionally matured, and who has a lot of pent-up frustrations for one reason or another. It's best to let those feelings out. If the words aren't there, do not force yourself to write. Focus on something else. Sit with yourself, in the quiet, and feel what you are feeling. The answers are all within you. You just have to be willing to let them rise.

Some nights nothing works. Sleep is the best course.

Sometimes i think we over-revise because we never feel satisfied enough with what we have written.
Often I go back and read old poems and think, good, God, what garbage, and i want to burn all of them.
Tweaking is okay, i think...but also i feel poems are best in original state and we mess with them too much and take away what was spontaneous and natural and best.
But yes, i understand this feeling...especially on nights i want to write but can't...Empty.
