We Put You in a Box

We Put You in a Box

A Poem by Sirius King
"

We Put You in a Box

"

We Put You in a Box

We put you in a box

And that’s where you need to stay

Who the hell do you think you are?

…Trying to escape

We put you on a pedestal

To watch you stand tall

Then pulled it right from under you

To witness the great fall

We shoved you in the closet

Dressed in despair and doubt

Then, in the name of Jesus

We crucified you for coming out

We embraced you with open arms

Promised we’d be friends for life

But as soon as you weren’t looking

In your back, we placed a knife

We offered you a lifeline

When you really needed help

We gave you enough rope

Just to hang yourself

We put you in a box

And buried it 6 feet deep

Then dug you back up

So the process could repeat

thank you BR

i appreciate it!
Great rhythm and meter for such a horrible subject. I have known bullying my whole life- bus, school, false friends, workplace, online. I have started standing up for myself and others when I see it happening. it is the only way to make a difference. I thought it would get easier as an adult, and in some ways it has. But some things never change. The most important thing I have found is that it is important to find and hold onto and spend time with your true peers. Those who can understand you.
You're wonderful.

I agree it's a little easier to deal with as an adult because you now have a stranger voice to stand.. read more
I think you just neatly describe days of me being bullied back in middle and high school. Hoo boy. :/

thanks again Keith!
I was disturbed by this because even at the end (6 feet under) there is no let up in the process. An enlightening piece Serenus. Thank you

thank you NH
This is really good, really true. Why does society have so many damn boxes anyway and why are they even thought of us being needed?

This is a poem I want to read again and again - so many "boxes" we put people in, neatly labeled but never really telling the whole of what's inside. This is such an amazing piece, Serenus!

i agree, too many boxes

thank you Rita!
We need to stereotype or have these neat boxes stating who or what you are and when you don't conform well then .. Poignant write love the last stanza , we don't live and learn...
