America, Oh America

You have become an overprotective mother

You say, your children need protection from themselves

Sending the supervision of “big brother”

 

Unwarranted search and seizure

Unlawful phone taps

All in the name of “National Security”

Freedoms snatched across the map

 

America, Oh America

You are the police force of the world

Who gave you such authority?

Pure arrogance unfurled

 

 Your children are starving

And you pay them no attention

While you clean the homes of others

Breaking and entering without permission

 

Mother of freedom

Lady of liberty

Mistress of justice

Or is that all history?

 

Mother America

Stop hiding from the truth

 You have become unfit

And should be charged

With neglect and abuse

Your poem told a real story. I like the old quote. "Don't try to clean another house when your house is falling apart." You live near by me in Cleveland. My home Detroit is falling down and may not get up. I wish the new leaders follow the Depression way. Create jobs and cheaper housing. A working America is a healthy America. Thank you for the excellent poetry.

True when there is no way for ppl to make an honest living, they turn to less-than honest means to feed their families . ..and instead of keeping our money and resources here, we ship it off to other country via cheap labor and war... self-destruction seems like a drug to this "new" America

Good piece, good rhymes. It's great to see you writing again Serenus. America is a lot of things besides a huge chunk of continent with a s**t load of aggravating people living in it and all of them in front of me in the check out isle at Wal Mart. America is ideals. Ideals we can't even live up to half the time. The patriot act (that name should have been a big f*****g red flag right there) had it's purpose but alas it was misrepresented and misunderstood by many. It was a gigantic piece of legislation rammed though congress and the senate by the same a******s that convinced the American public to get behind the Invasion of Iraq and look how great that turned out. Like Iraq much of the patriot act has been quietly forgotten about in favor of more immediate problems like a stagnent economy and the NRA making sure private citizens can hunt deer with bazookas. What a country, ey?

I love this country. But its fallen to this and much much worser things. I honestly think its because that along the years, people, top people, just kina got in it for the money. They aren't what things used to be ya know. I can't really explain it. But nice poem! :)

I would have to disagree on one account. Allow me to phrase in the form of a question, who defines America? The government or the people? It's the government that introduces and enacts the "nanny state", not "We the People". It is "We the People" that have become the subjects of the political class. America is still the best place to see your dreams come true. No other place on the globe can a person come from humble beginnings and become a millionaire all from a vision conceived in ones head. It's the government that has gotten too big for their britches. The government.

and without laws our children would be raped on the way to a bus stop that doesn't exist...
the policies in place over mother all I believe -free this free that but yet if we have some one earn their food they may sue due to an imaginary injury-threats come in many versions
I have never lived in a third world country we do not envy the stale piece of bread the person next to us is eating we envy others brand names
but the history of this country is strong-the settlers were given nothing and fought for our freedoms
just to be able to share our thoughts here is a tremendous gift that not many have
yes we have laws-but how would we feel if an uninsured driver hit our car and killed our friend because they drank to much

I'm all for law and order, you have to have those things if you want a functioning country, but how far does the the reach of government go? why is the government in the business of marriage? why does any "free" human being need a license (permission from the government) to be with the one they love forever... government has its place, i just feel (far too many times) its crossed the line.

I do not believe sex should determine marriage but a legal license should once a couple has made the commitment they are more then just in love they are now financially intertwined and if the love ends the circumstances (in most cases) get ugly for both parties.We are over governed yes but we are also over populated it is a crazy world...I appreciated the thanks ...so thanks for your thanks truly

I understand the legal and business reasons for a marriage license, but my point is when the government has the power to deny that union (whether same-sex or not) it has too much power...if you have to ask permission for freedom, are u really free?

although i love my country i can't say i disagree with you here. these are all sentiments i have shared for years. we assume the role of global watchdog under the guises of democracy and protection. kinda smacks of the mafia's role in the big cities (protection rackets). as i was telling jacob yesterday, there is a video on youtube called "monster 2008" by steppenwolf which pretty much exemplifies all you have stated herein. excellent prose here, dear poet!
