We Shall Never Speak Its Name

We Shall Never Speak Its Name

A Poem by Sirius King
"

A very taboo subject that is very close to home...i hope this helps someone

"

It seems to have grown

 At a rapid pace

Its presence is known

Though we’ve never seen it’s face

It’s taken over her laugh

And the way she talks

It’s changed her behavior

Even the way she walks

No one wants to admit it

But everyone knows it’s there

 The family never mentions it

Maybe it’s because they’re scared

"Just don’t say anything...

Maybe it will get better

 On its own"

Searching for a remedy

But the cure is unknown

Maybe she can beat

This beast

And get back to being

 At her best

A place of happiness...

Maybe it’s just a test?

But it’s got me stressed…

It takes a lot of love

And great patience

To deal with the realness

Of mental illness

Shame…

Our Mother/Son

 Relationship is strained

Our conversations are strange

Every day is a challenge

Just to deal with the pain

Every day we drift further…

 …And further apart

There is an obvious void there

A huge hole in my heart

There is no doubt

There has been a change

Will it ever be the same?

We all know with whom/ or what

 To place the blame…

…But we shall never speak its name

I'm living with this right now, but it's more alcohol related, but the effect on my girlfriends mothers mind is basically the same. It affects everything.

I love the line "there is an obvious void there"
The best poetry comes from those things you can forget, your earlier stuff seems closer to your heart, have you used up your memories? Or are you more socially aware now?

Heartfelt write, it gave me chills to read it, I'm so sorry you have the need to write this Serenus, I hope it proves somewhat cathartic to have purged it, although I know that nothing can take the pain away. Very brave write, nicely pen'd. x

I truly appreciate that.
I believe a lot of poetry is very personal; probably most of it. It's hard to spill your heart out onto the written page and see no one read what you've written. But some things, you just have to get off your chest because the weight becomes too much to bear. that's where writing comes in; it gives you that outlet to get it out there, much like you've done here. We don't know what type of affliction exactly that you're facing, but we sympathize and feel your pain just the same because we all have our own crosses to bear...

thanx for the review...i really appreciate it
There are a couple of poems that I'd written that I felt it was way too personal to post up. They are the ones about my depression, my thoughts of suicide. But, nonetheless, they are posted through here. I really dig into honest poems. Honest poem are a true poet's strength. So, my friend, you did your job with pouring all your heart and soul with this one. And I thank you for actually posting this up and let us read the lines of greath strength.

Psychologist don't know the spiritual side to having a "mental illness". It's more like being touched by the divine, once were called mystics. Well written.

No doubt there is, some lack guidance
Man, I feel you here. This is powerful. We talked about how personal poems are simply stronger. I feel the struggle in this one. And I understand it. My entire family has a history of mental illness. We're almost like a psychology textbook on the subject, with so many different kinds in our family. An uncle with dissociative personality disorder, several (if not most) of my family is manic-depressive/bipolar, we've got schizophrenics, we have it all. At twenty I live in constant fear of whether or not I'll end up developing one. Most in my family got it at an earlier age then me, so there's a chance I might not develop anything. I have trouble sleeping, I sometimes go weeks without it, but I believe that's more because of things that have occurred in my past that have left a traumatic mark on who I am. Either way, I understand where you're coming from here and you're really brave to put that out here for the world to see.
